Introducing the new
ACT! by Sage 2008 (10.0) Dashboard Views

Most companies today face tighter margins, fierce competition,
and highly selective customers. That's why it is critical that
sales professionals and management recognize the importance of
easily monitoring both an individual’s and a team’s real-time
sales pipeline. This is one of the main reasons ACT! 2008 now
includes interactive graphical dashboards to monitor sales
opportunities and activities. ACT! 2008 ships with three
predefined dashboards: ACT! default Dashboard, ACT! Activities
Dashboard, and ACT! Opportunities Dashboard. You can easily
choose your own dashboard and set the filters to meet your
individual needs. See Customizing Dashboards to Fit Your Needs
article to learn how to set the dashboards for your own use .

Imagine trying to drive a car without dashboard displays. You’d
never know how fast you were going, when you were running out of
gas or if the car was overheating. You’d never chance it with a
vehicle, so why take a similar risk with your business?
Dashboards for customer relationship management (CRM) programs
and other types of software perform a similar function. They
give you a visual snapshot of the information compiled by and
stored in the program – in effect, a snapshot of how your
business is running.
Until recently, dashboard functionality was only available in
enterprise-level products, but now ACT!
2008, the small business CRM and sales force automation
software from Sage Software, has added dashboarding in an
important new version upgrade, Act 2008, that marks the
product’s 20th anniversary.
Long before there was Outlook and long before there was
SalesForce.com, there was Act. The program has had longevity
because it answers the needs of sales people and their managers
and solves real problems. But any program is only as good as its
latest version. This is a good one.

In
one of the most tightly contested categories, ACT! by Sage 2006 edged
Web-based software stalwart Salesforce.com by just three percentage points —
41 to 38 percent. A pioneer is the contact-management field, ACT! now
allows you to organize contacts into companies and groups. A new "tree"
view graphically depicts contact and company relationships and
hierarchies. At a glance you can see divisions, employees and individual
contacts. Also, you can now add contacts to multiple groups and
companies. Sage also now boasts that third-party companies have created
some 40 new ACT add-on solutions to extend the program's capabilities
and perform specialized marketing, shipping and synchronization
functions, to name a few.

Traditional Contact Management Still
Works

On-demand
customer-relationship management systems like Salesforce.com may
be gaining attention and mindshare, but that doesn't mean the end
of the line for traditional workgroup-oriented contact and CRM
products. The latest versions of the venerable ACT! by Sage
Premium for Workgroups (from Sage Software, formerly known as Best
Software) and GoldMine Corporate Edition 7.0 (from FrontRange
Solutions) continue to provide a versatile set of tools for
tracking sales leads, contacts, calendars, campaigns, and more.
As you might expect from products in
this relatively mature category, the new features added in the
latest versions don't necessarily compel upgrades for existing
users. If, on the other hand, you're considering this class of
products for the first time, ACT! is the more approachable of the
two. GoldMine's strengths include its extensibility and
customizability, telephony and VoIP integration, and
project-tracking tools, but we found its standard interface to be
less straightforward.
Although both ACT! and GoldMine
can use industrial-strength database back ends to provide
scalability for larger workgroups, both also include runtime
database engines that install with minimal difficulty and no
ongoing administrative demands.

At its core, ACT is a user-friendly database
that tracks contact history, sales history, communications, and other
client information. But ACT also meets the challenges of business users.
It performs well for those who require client forecasts, graphs, charts,
and well-organized customer information.
